Two Montgomery County Public Schools food and nutrition services staff members working at the Glen Haven Elementary School meal distribution site have tested positive for COVID-19. Based on the investigation by County public health officials, the last day the employees worked at the meal distribution site was Thursday, March 26 and neither employee was showing symptoms at the time. Employees who worked in close contact with the affected employees have been asked to self-quarantine for 14 days since their last contact with the patients. The risk to community members and students is considered low, but residents who visited the Glen Haven site prior to March 26 are asked to self-monitor for symptoms.

Consistent with CDC guidance, the employees used masks and gloves while working and handled prepackaged food in the school kitchen, which was placed on tables and in trunks of cars for students and parents. MCPS has temporarily closed the school kitchen and is utilizing a mobile delivery truck to continue food distribution at Glen Haven.

Council President Sidney Katz made the following statement upon learning that two Montgomery County Public Schools food and nutrition staff members tested positive for Covid-19.

  • This food distribution site is part of the school system's expansive effort to ensure that students receive nutritious meals during the pandemic.
  • MCPS' emergency meals service is a shining example of how our community members are coming together during this time of anxiety and stress to make life better for others in the midst of this health crisis. We thank everyone at MCPS for their ongoing efforts during this difficult time.
  • Even in this unprecedented time of uncertainty, I do not want our residents to lose hope for our future. We are in this fight together, and our unified effort is what will enable our county to emerge from this crisis with an even stronger sense of community.
  • We continue to call on each of our residents to join us in helping to stop the spread of Covid-19. Stay home unless travel is essential, wash your hands and contact your health care provider if you become sick. Also, new guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends wearing a cloth face mask covering in public in addition to practicing physical distancing.
