5.2.2024 "The Art of Xiaosheng Bi" Exhibition to Be Open to Celebrate AAPI Heritage Month

CCACC Art Gallery hosts "The Art of Xiaosheng Bi" Exhibition from May 11th to June 28th, 2024 to celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month. 

As a first-generation immigrant from China, especially as an artist, understanding what American culture entails, how to integrate into it, understanding one's original cultural heritage and maintaining one's personality, navigating through differing ideas and concepts, and finding a creative direction that blends traditional Chinese culture with modern life to become an artist working to be part of American contemporary art are questions that Bi often contemplates.

The 90 pieces featured in this exhibition are divided into five sections: Celadon "Garden in My Mind", Sculpture "Four Seasons", Tea bowls "Tea Zen", Cup ware "Beauty of Functionality", and Calligraphy "Universal Love". "Garden in My Mind" expresses people's yearning for an elegant paradise-like life by combining Chinese gardening elements and Song Dynasty porcelain aesthetics. "Four Seasons" is inspired by the erratic and mysterious artistic concepts in Peking Opera performances and the impact of seasonal changes on people's emotions. "Tea Zen" embodies the transformation from traditional tea ceremonies "Zen" state to the emotional sensation of ordinary life. "Beauty of Functionality" shows how daily wares can exceed practical functions and embody emotional enrichment. "Universal Love" is a re-interpretation of the functionality and aesthetics of traditional calligraphy from another perspective to appreciate it as a contemporary abstract art.

At last, Bi hopes these works echo the exhibition's theme – integration without losing oneself, being together yet retaining individuality.
