About the Club

The CCACC World Folk Dance Club teaches and practices international folk dances including the waltz, tango, and polka. It also practices dances from around the world including Israel, the Balkan peninsula, Asia, and the Americas. No experience or partner is necessary.

What is Folk Dance?

Folk dances are performed at social gatherings by people with little or no professional training, often to traditional music. They are designed for stage performance although traditional folkdances may be arranged for performances.

Their execution is dominated by an inherited traditional rather than innovation. New dancers often learn by observing others. Some people define folk dancing as dancing for which there is no governing body and where there are no competitive or professional performances.

Terminology

The term “folk dance” is sometimes applied to dances of historical importance in European culture and history; typically originated from before the 20th century. In other cultures, the term “ethnic dance” or “traditional dance” are sometimes used, although these terms may also encompass ceremonial dances.

There are a number of modern dances, such as hip hop, where the term “folk dance” does not apply but instead terms such as “street dance” or “vernacular dance” are used. The term “folk dance” is reserved for dances that are bound by tradition and originated in times when there was a distinction between the dances of “common folk” and dances of the “high society”.
