To celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States and the 82nd Annual Memorial Day Parade in Rockville, the CCACC Youth Dragon Dance Team was invited to participate in this longstanding community tradition on May 25, 2026. Through an energetic and vibrant dragon dance performance, the team showcased the spirit of youth while highlighting the rich heritage and enduring appeal of traditional Chinese culture.
Undeterred by Rain
This year's parade carried special significance as part of nationwide celebrations commemorating America's 250th anniversary. The event brought together numerous community organizations, veterans' groups, schools, and cultural institutions.
However, challenging weather conditions added an extra layer of difficulty to the day. Forecasts had predicted a high chance of rain since early morning, and dark clouds loomed overhead throughout the event.
Despite the unfavorable weather, the CCACC Youth Dragon Dance Team rose to the challenge and successfully completed the entire parade route during breaks in the rain. With high spirits and synchronized movements, the golden dragon soared and danced through the streets, drawing enthusiastic applause and cheers from spectators along the route. Rather than diminishing the performance, the rainy conditions highlighted the team's resilience and determination, making them one of the most memorable attractions of the parade.
Teamwork Made It Possible
In addition to the weather, the team faced another major challenge this year. Several veteran members were preparing to graduate from high school, while others were unable to participate due to academic and extracurricular commitments. As a result, the team recruited four sixth-grade students just before the parade.
For these newcomers, who had no prior dragon dance experience, learning the necessary skills and performing in a large-scale parade within only two weeks seemed nearly impossible.
Faced with this challenge, the team demonstrated remarkable unity and dedication. Veteran members took on the responsibility of mentoring the new recruits, making the most of every practice session. From basic footwork and rhythm coordination to dragon-handling techniques, they patiently demonstrated and carefully guided each step of the learning process.
Many initially doubted that such intensive training could be completed in so little time. Yet the team refused to back down. Through hard work, perseverance, and countless hours of practice, they proved one thing: Nothing Is Impossible.
After two weeks of intensive training, the new members not only mastered the fundamentals of dragon dancing but also performed seamlessly alongside the veteran team members during the parade. Their perseverance, teamwork, and commitment embody the most valuable traditions passed down within the dragon dance program.
Recognition of Growth and Achievement
The team's efforts were rewarded with an outstanding achievement. The City of Rockville Department of Recreation and Parks awarded the CCACC Youth Dragon Dance Team Second Place in the Mayor and Council Awards in recognition of their exceptional performance.
Among nearly 60 participating parade and performance groups, the CCACC Youth Dragon Dance Team stood out and earned this prestigious honor.
During this historically significant celebration, the soaring golden dragon brought joy and good wishes to the community while symbolizing the harmony and vitality of multiculturalism in American society. As the team members learned through this experience, when people work together toward a common goal, nothing is impossible.
Celebrating Youth, Culture, and Community
For many years, the CCACC Youth Dragon Dance Team has been an active presence at cultural festivals and major community celebrations throughout the Greater Washington region. The program is dedicated to promoting traditional Chinese culture while helping young people develop teamwork, responsibility, and leadership skills.
This year's successful performance in challenging weather conditions not only showcased the beauty of Chinese culture but also demonstrated the courage, unity, and perseverance of a new generation of youth who are willing to embrace challenges and never give up.
