CCACC Art Gallery will host the opening reception for the exhibition "Market Forces & Cultural Identity: The Art of Dr. Gan Yu" on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at 2:00 PM. This exhibition is also presented in celebration of the 2026 Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month. We warmly invite art enthusiasts to join us for this special occasion.
Based in New York, artist Gan Yu is a multifaceted figure whose practice spans roles as an artist, curator, and scholar. He earned his M.A. in Studio Art from Minnesota State University, a Ph.D. in Chinese Painting from the China Academy of Art, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of History of Art & Architecture at Harvard University.
He is currently a Professor and international doctoral supervisor at the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, and also teaches contemporary Chinese ink art courses and workshops at The Art Students League of New York. In addition, Gan Yu serves on the board of the Cohen Art Foundation in New York.
Dr. Gan Yu's artistic footprint extends internationally. He has presented solo exhibitions at major art institutions across the United States and Asia, and remains active in prominent international art fairs and museum exhibitions. His work has received numerous awards and widespread recognition within the art world. At the core of his practice is an ongoing exploration of the dialectical relationship between individual experience and larger structural forces, positioning art as a method of observing and interpreting the world.
This exhibition features 17 selected works spanning a wide range of media, including pen, colored pencil, marker, ink, acrylic, and mixed media, extending further into torn paper, canvas, and sculptural installations. Through unconventional mark-making and material experimentation, the artist redefines the boundaries of pictorial language. Among the works is a striking sculptural piece based on Wall Street data, transforming abstract financial information into tangible form, visually compelling and conceptually profound.
In Dr. Gan Yu's work, the stock market is not merely a symbol of economic activity, but a visual score in which politics, technology, and culture converge. The lines and structures shaped by fluctuating indices convey a precise, almost mechanical logic, while handwritten inscriptions layered over them introduce personal emotion and everyday narratives. Together, they create a polyphonic space where rationality and subjectivity intersect. Global news, public discourse, and even private memory are superimposed within the compositions, imbuing the works with both historical depth and immediacy.
The rise and fall of the market pulse like breath, its jagged rhythms reflecting both the uncertainty of the future and the fragility and resilience of human life. Through this lens, the artist proposes a way of seeing the world: individuals are both shaped by systemic forces and active participants in shaping them. The financial market is thus translated into an ongoing form of "collective performance art," where countless invisible hands, from New York to London, from Hong Kong to Shanghai, jointly map the dynamic landscape of contemporary civilization.
We sincerely invite you to visit CCACC Art Gallery and experience the profound interplay between market dynamics and cultural identity embodied in these works.
