He delivered a special lecture at the CCACC Art Gallery titled "Sharing My Life: Make Impossible Become Possible," in which he shared how he overcame numerous challenges in forensic investigations and his life journey, making the impossible into possible.
A Heartfelt Visit Filled with Gratitude
On the morning of March 30, Dr. Lee, accompanied by his wife, Xiaping Jiang, and daughter, Sherry Lee, visited the CCACC Adult Day Healthcare Center (ADHC). They were warmly welcomed by Rita S. Lewi, Executive Director of CCACC; Dr. Yuchi Huang, CCACC Board Chair; Ned Li, CCACC Co-founder & Director of CCACC ADHC; Chih-Hsiang Li, CCACC Co-founder & Director of CCACC Sports Center; Li-Fang C. Liu, CCACC Deputy Executive Director.
Dr. Lee expressed his care for the elderly members at CCACC ADHC, creating a heartwarming atmosphere. He then personally pinned a badge engraved with his English name—symbolizing professionalism and respect—onto Lewi.
The guests then proceeded to the second-floor conference room, where they engaged in warm conversations. A luncheon was specially prepared for Dr. Lee and his family, featuring a total of twelve exquisite dishes, from appetizers to desserts, all meticulously selected and prepared by HuaiGuo Guan, the leader of CCACC ADHC's catering team. During the meal, Dr. Lee personally presented Guan with a commemorative badge as a token of appreciation.
Opening Speeches Kicked Off the Lecture
At 1:00 PM, guests and attendees gathered at the CCACC Art Gallery. Lewi delivered the opening remarks, extending heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Lee for his visit and commending his outstanding contributions to forensic science. She then invited the audience to give a warm round of applause to welcome the legendary figure. Following this, Dr. Huang took the stage, expressing deep respect for Dr. Lee and thanking him for taking the time to visit CCACC.
Rising from Adversity: Make Impossible Become Possible
Amid great anticipation, Dr. Lee stepped onto the stage. He began by thanking CCACC and praising its exceptional efforts in serving the community and promoting Chinese culture. He then introduced his wife, Xiaping Jiang, and daughter, Sherry Lee. Drawing from his personal experiences, he illustrated how the theme "Make Impossible Become Possible" has been a guiding principle throughout his life.
Born in 1938 in Rugao, Jiangsu Province, into a wealthy family of salt merchants, Dr. Lee faced drastic changes when his family moved to Taiwan in 1949. Tragedy struck when his father perished in the sinking of the Taiping. Despite hardship, his mother, Shuzhen Wang, single-handedly supported the family through difficult times. Dr. Lee recounted that his father's passing drastically altered their circumstances. Due to their financial struggles, he chose not to burden his older siblings, who were already working, with educational expenses and instead pursued admission to a publicly funded police academy. Graduating with top honors in 1960, he later made the bold decision to study in the United States, overcoming immense challenges to earn a B.S. in forensic science from John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City, followed by an M.S. and Ph.D. in biochemistry from New York University.
Reflecting on his mother's influence, Dr. Lee recalled her extraordinary perseverance in raising thirteen children, ensuring each received a quality education. Remarkably, all thirteen siblings earned doctoral degrees, and three were named among the "Ten Outstanding Young Americans." He noted that his mother's resilience and wisdom not only shaped his outlook on life but also continuously inspired him throughout his life.
Success Is from Hard Work
Dr. Lee then shared his insights on leadership and time management, emphasizing the philosophy "Success is from Hard Work." Encouraging the audience to cherish time, seize opportunities, and bravely overcome challenges, he recounted the highlights of his illustrious career. Having lectured in 74 countries, authored or co-authored over 40 professional books, and published more than 300 scientific articles, he has also been awarded honorary doctorates from 30 prestigious universities. In 2016, the world's first forensic science museum dedicated to his work—the Henry C. Lee Museum of Forensic Science—was inaugurated in his hometown, Rugao, Jiangsu Province, with over 500 legal experts, scholars, and distinguished guests from around the world attending the grand opening.
Throughout his lecture, Dr. Lee captivated the audience with a dynamic presentation, seamlessly blending humor with heartfelt sincerity. His engaging storytelling kept the audience entertained, making for an enjoyable and enriching experience.
Iconic Cases: Unveiling the Mysteries of Forensic Science
As a preeminent figure in the field of forensic science, Dr. Lee has been involved in countless high-profile investigations. He played a pivotal role in cases such as the O.J. Simpson murder trial and the unsolved murder of child beauty queen JonBenét Ramsey—both of which garnered international attention. Additionally, he contributed to investigations of two of the most controversial assassinations in U.S. history: those of President John F. Kennedy and his brother, Robert F. Kennedy. He was also deeply involved in the forensic analysis following the 911 attacks.
During the lecture, Dr. Lee delved into the core principles of forensic science, demonstrating how crime scene investigations rely on precise methodologies. He introduced essential forensic measuring tools and explained how techniques like "pattern for identity" and "pattern for reconstruction" aid in reconstructing crime scenes. Using an illustrative image, he meticulously demonstrated how forensic experts extract critical clues, allowing the audience to grasp the intricate details of crime scene analysis.
Dr. Lee also emphasized the importance of physical evidence, such as blood, hair, fibers, and DNA, in solving cases. He explained that through precise measurements and scene reconstructions, investigators can deduce key suspect characteristics, including height and weight. The audience was enthralled as they gained a firsthand understanding of the meticulous nature of forensic investigations.
As the lecture drew to a close, Dr. Lee discussed how advancements in modern technology have significantly enhanced forensic efficiency, expediting case resolutions. Concluding his talk, he expressed his gratitude to the audience with a traditional Chinese blessing, met with thunderous applause.
Lively Interactions and In-Depth Discussions
During the Q&A session, attendees eagerly posed questions about Dr. Lee's most renowned cases, seeking insights into his investigative techniques. Responding with patience and expertise, he engaged in stimulating discussions with the audience. One enthusiastic attendee praised him as someone who can "Make Invisible Become Visible."
After the lecture, Dr. Lee warmly engaged with attendees, signing autographs and posing for photographs. Many seized the opportunity to capture this memorable moment, creating an atmosphere of excitement and admiration. In media interviews, Dr. Lee spoke highly of CCACC's efforts in fostering cultural integration and strengthening community development, acknowledging its long-standing positive impact on the Chinese American community.
A Memorable Conclusion with Deep Gratitude
At 3:00 PM, the event concluded successfully, leaving a lasting impression on all attendees. Special thanks were extended to CCACC Board Member Roger Xu and the Information Technology Department for their meticulous planning. To ensure the event's success, they spent two weeks installing equipment, conducting multiple tests, and making adjustments. Appreciation was also expressed to all CCACC staff and volunteers who dedicated their time and effort to making this event a great success.
