Gaithersburg, MD – (March 2, 2020) A site-based assessment team from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA®), will arrive on Monday, March 23, 2020 to examine all aspects of the Gaithersburg Police Department’s policies and procedures, management, operations, and support services. Verification by the team that Gaithersburg meets the Commission’s state-of-the-art standards is part of a voluntary process to gain accreditation – a highly prized recognition of public safety professional excellence. Accreditation is for four years, during which the agency must submit annual reports and participate in annual remote web-based assessments attesting continued compliance with those standards under which it was initially accredited. The Gaithersburg Police Department has to comply with approximately 200 standards in order to gain accredited status. As part of the assessment, agency personnel and members of the community are invited to offer comments at a public information session on Tuesday, March 24, at 6:30 p.m. The session will be conducted in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 31 S. Summit Ave., Gaithersburg, MD 20877. Individuals may also provide comments to the assessment team by telephone. Call 301-258-6400 between the hours of 1 and 3 p.m. on Tuesday, March 24, and ask for the CALEA Team. Telephone comments as well as appearances at the public information session are limited to 10 minutes per person and must address the agency’s ability to comply with CALEA Standards. Comments in writing about the Gaithersburg Police Department’s ability to meet the accreditation standards can be sent to: Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement, Inc. (CALEA®), 13575 Heathcote Blvd., Suite 320, Gainesville, VA 20155. A copy of the standards is available at the Gaithersburg Police Department. The local contact is Accreditation Manager Christine Fekete, 240-805-1774.
