Gaithersburg, MD (March 10, 2020) The City of Gaithersburg invites you to participate in activities that celebrate and improve the environment during Gaithersburg Green Month in April. In addition to being fun and educational, it is also a great way for students to earn service learning credits while making our community a better place to live. Sign in each time you attend one of the Green Learning Series workshops and you’ll be entered into a raffle for a Solar Powered Portable Charging Bank.
Green Month/Arbor Day Proclamation Monday, April 6, 7:30 p.m., City Hall Council Chambers, 31 S. Summit Ave. With an official proclamation, the Mayor and City Council will designate April as “Gaithersburg Green Month” and April 24 as “Arbor Day” in the City of Gaithersburg. Annual Environmental Awards will be presented at a special reception earlier that evening.
Green Learning Series: Join the Butterfly Bandwagon! Gardening with Native Plants Thursday, April 9, 7 p.m., Activity Center at Bohrer Park This interactive workshop is designed to help you create a garden that provides habitat for our winged friends, adds beauty to your outdoor space, and protects our drinking water and waterways. Professional garden coaches will be on hand to provide planning assistance and answer questions about sustainable gardening and gardening with native plants. Seating is limited. Green Learning Series: Recycling Beyond the Basics April 16, 7 p.m., Benjamin Gaither Center Ever wondered how (or if) recycling REALLY works? Join us to learn how what you do at home is part of a complex global industry. This presentation covers how to recycle effectively, what can (and can't) be recycled in the City of Gaithersburg (and why), the impact that “wish-cycling” of non-recyclable materials has on the program, and a brief review of measuring the sustainability of recycling via greenhouse gas emissions. We'll take a look at how your recycling gets sorted, where it gets sold and what the future of the program might look like. We’ll also play some games to make sure it all makes sense.
Community Green Up Day Saturday, April 18, 9 a.m. to noon, various locations Spring cleaning takes on a new meaning during this year’s Community Green Up Day. Join hundreds of volunteers as they make a difference throughout the community by cleaning up and beautifying local streams, schools, parks, and homeowner association common areas. The City is looking for volunteers. Students can earn student service learning credits by participating. Montgomery County GreenFest Sunday, April 19, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Brookside Gardens, 1800 Glenallan Ave., Wheaton, MD 20902 This free, family-friendly event connects residents to local and national environmental leaders and green businesses and products and features live musicians, drummers and dancers, kids tree climbing, 80+ vendors and exhibitors, an electric vehicle and car show, food trucks, and more. Walk the trails, chill out on the grass, and explore the fabulous Visitor and Nature Centers, all while discovering how you can go green at home and in the community. Environmental Film Night - 2040 Sunday, April 19, 7 p.m., Arts Barn, 311 Kent Square Rd. Presented by the City of Gaithersburg Environmental Affairs Committee Join us for a special free screening and exclusive premier of 2040, a hybrid feature documentary that is billed as “a story of hope that looks at the very real possibility that humanity could reverse global warming and improve the lives of every living thing in the process.” This film will be released in the U.S. in late May. DIY Recycle Paper Wednesday, April 22, 4 p.m., Robertson Park Youth Center Make your very own recycled paper. Bring your junk mail, construction paper, or an arts project you are ready to part with and turn it in to a new piece of paper all over again.
Green Learning Series: I Pay What??? A Crash Course on Your Energy Bill Thursday, April 23, 7 p.m., Casey Community Center When it comes to your utility bill, you may be spending more than you want to. The Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection’s Residential Energy Program can help you demystify your utility bill and show you ways to save energy and money in your home. All participants leave with at least one energy saving measure for their home and tons of tips.
Community Shredding & E-Waste Recycling Event Saturday, April 25, 9 a.m. – Noon, Activity Center at Bohrer Park Just in time for spring cleaning. All paper will go through a secure document destruction process and be recycled. Select electronics may also be brought to the event for recycling, and CFL and incandescent light bulbs (no LEDs) will also be accepted this year. Please note, CFL bulbs should not be put in the trash due to the release of mercury when the bulb breaks. Click here for a list of accepted materials. Event is free; food donations graciously accepted by Gaithersburg HELP in support of their community pantry.
Native Plant Sale Saturday, April 25, 9 a.m. – Noon, Activity Center at Bohrer Park In partnership with the Muddy Branch Alliance, the City of Gaithersburg is offering a one-stop shop for your native plant needs. After you finish recycling your light bulbs, e-waste and confidential paper during the Community Shredding & E-Waste Recycling event, stop by the rear of the parking lot to find out about all the best things to grow in Gaithersburg.
Green Learning Series: Organic Lawn Care Thursday, April 30, 7 p.m., Gaithersburg Library Join Mary Travaglini, Sustainable Landscapes Manager for the Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection, to learn about healthy soils and tips for maintaining your lawn without synthetic fertilizers or pesticides.
