In the United States, over 6 million individuals aged 65 and older suffer from dementia. In the Montgomery County community, the number of dementia patients is on the rise. Statistics show that over 80% of dementia patients receive care at home. Among the caregivers for dementia patients, two-thirds are women, and one-quarter belong to the "sandwich generation," meaning they simultaneously care for dementia patients and children or teenagers under the age of 18.
Caring for dementia patients is no easy task. The behavioral challenges of patients constantly test the patience of caregivers. As the condition of the patient worsens, caregivers may face external scrutiny, affecting their confidence. According to surveys, caregivers of dementia patients are also increasingly becoming a high-risk group for developing mental health issues.
CCACC Health Center has been closely monitoring families with dementia patients in the Montgomery County Chinese community. With support from the LIVING WELL Center of Excellence department in Maryland, we will be organizing a free online workshop series for caregivers of dementia patients in 2024. Participants will learn caregiving skills and self-care techniques through group discussions, sharing experiences, and emotional support.
