11.15.2023 Board of Supervisors of Elections Certifies Gaithersburg Election Results

GAITHERSBURG, Md. (November 15, 2023). The Gaithersburg Board of Supervisors of Elections officially certified the winners of the Gaithersburg municipal election for City Council as Neil Harris, Yamil Hernández, and Robert T. Wu. The newly elected officials will be sworn in at a special session of the Mayor and City Council on November 20, 2023, at 7:30 p.m. Click here to see viewing options. Each of these elected officials will serve a four-year term. The next municipal election for Mayor and two City Council Members will take place on November 4, 2025.

After approving authorized mail-in and provisional ballots, the total number of ballots cast in the November 7, 2023, election was 4,497. The voter turnout was officially 12.12%. This compares to a voter turnout of 12.45% in the 2021 City of Gaithersburg election for Mayor and two City Council members.

Neil Harris received 3,089 votes (25.57%), Yamil Hernández received 2,361 votes (19.54%), and Robert T. Wu received 3,137 votes (25.97%). The remaining candidates in order of total votes received were Shanika Whitehurst with 2,222 votes (18.39%), Daniel Lukomsky with 942 votes (7.80%), and Omodamola Williams with 886 votes (7.33%).

Voters had the option of voting by mail or casting their vote in-person at the Activity Center at Bohrer Park, the only polling place for this election. Same-day voter registration was available for in-person voting, with voters casting provisional ballots pending approval. There were 1,701 votes cast in-person. Of those, 68 were provisional ballots that were subsequently reviewed by the Board of Supervisors of Elections. There were 2,796 mail-in votes for this election.

Candidates must be qualified voters in the City at the time of the election and must be City residents for at least one year immediately preceding their election. They must also reside in Gaithersburg during their term in office. All the newly elected officials met these requirements.
