In the United States, there are over 6 million people with dementia who are aged 65 and older. In the Montgomery County community, there is also an increasing number of dementia patients. Many patients are taken to clinics by their family members seeking medical professionals' help upon noticing the symptoms. Statistics show that over 80% of dementia patients receive care at home, with adult children being the primary caregivers. Among the caregivers of dementia patients, two-thirds are women, and one-quarter belong to the "sandwich generation," meaning they need to simultaneously care for dementia patients and children or teenagers under 18 years old.

Taking care of dementia patients is not easy. The patients' behavioral issues constantly test the caregivers' patience. When the patients' condition worsens, caregivers may face external scrutiny, which can affect their confidence. According to surveys, caregivers of dementia patients are also becoming a high-risk group for developing mental illnesses.

CCACC Health Center's "Care Village" project has been focusing on dementia families in the Montgomery County Chinese community. This time, with the support of the LIVING WELL Center of Excellence department in Maryland, we will be hosting a seminar for caregivers of dementia patients. It will be hosted by Kate Lu, LCSW-C, the Director of CCACC Health Center and a clinical social worker, and Ms. Yuhsin Chou, a trained building better caregiver facilitator. Participants will learn caregiving skills and self-care techniques through group discussions, sharing experiences, and emotional support.

This online training workshop will last for 6 weeks, with each session being 2.5 hours long. It is specifically designed for caregivers of dementia patients. The latest session of the free online workshop for caregivers (English course) will begin on July 6th and continue for 6 consecutive weeks online.

If you fully participate in this course (including the pre-session briefing on June 29th), you will have the opportunity to enter a lucky draw upon completion and win a $25 gift card (limited to 4 individuals). Additionally, the Living Well Center of Excellence department offers a "Respite Care Support" fund specifically prepared for caregivers. All participants who fully attend this year's CCACC Pan Asian Medical Center BBC courses and are currently caring for dementia patients are eligible to apply (up to $800 subsidy for every 20 hours). We will provide detailed explanations during the pre-session briefing on June 29th.
