Gaithersburg, MD (October 10, 2022) Gaithersburg's Arts on the Green presents the Sisterhood II: Fine Crafts exhibit now on display through November 19, 2022. The Arts Barn is located at 311 Kent Square Road, Gaithersburg, Maryland. Viewing hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m., during events and other activities, or by appointment.
Meet the artists and view their works at an Artists Reception on Thursday, October 13 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The reception for the Relief from the Heat exhibit, featuring the Washington Water Color Association, at Kentlands Mansion will also be held that evening and attendees are invited to visit both galleries.
"Fine Crafts is an important phrase in the title for this exhibit, since the eleven women featured in this show are at the top of their craft both imaginatively and technically," says Exhibit Curator Mary Weiss Waldhorn. "They all have very unique sensibilities as they manipulate materials such as fabric, embroidery and industrial threads, a variety of clay and glass substances, found objects, and other materials to make compelling works of art.”
Featured artists in this exhibit include Karin Birch, Kristin Bohlander, Andrea Finch, Ruth Gowell, Mihira Karra, Lauren Kingsland, Judith Kornett, Phyllis Mayes, Margaret Polcawich, Christine Stovall, and Lisa Aerianna Tayerle.
Karin Birch's work incorporates embroidery, beading and paint to form lovely, abstract compositions. Felt pieces by Kristin Bohlander are amorphic in shape. Their color gives them wonderful spatial dimension. Some of Kristin's sculptural pieces incorporate twine and scrap metal from farms and industrial sites.
Andrea Finch's Magnolia motifs, made from fabric, blossom into large and exploding, colorful sculptural forms. Weavings and glass work by Ruth Gowell show great attention to color, detail and craftsmanship. Mihira Karra takes representational imagery, often portraits and landscapes, and reimagines them as two-dimensional images made of fabric pieces.
Judith Kornett and Phyllis Mayes create personal archetypal pieces that are very imaginative. Judith works with clay, woven fabric, beads, and assorted wires to create personal iconography. Phyllis injects much of her embroidered pieces with a poignant whimsy. Her assemblage piece in this show highlights her sense of color and movement.
Margaret Polcawich's expert craftsmanship reveals itself in beautifully made vessels and sculptural forms fashioned out of polymer and epoxy clays and beautiful wood choices. Christine Stovall, both a painter and ceramicist, shares her clay and driftwood sculptures that radiate fun and delight.
Lisa Aerianna Tayerle, a well-known printmaker, was also a master gardener for many years. Her sculptural pieces in this show highlight natural forms, such as gourds and seed pods, to express evocative aspects of the womanly persona.
