It was forty years ago, when Mr. Ned Li, one of the Chinese Culture and Community Service Center’s (CCACC) five founders, first gathered four local Chinese school representatives who all shared the same dream, the same passion for serving in the community, and discussed how to, using the Jewish Community Center as a model, create a Chinese Community Center that would serve the needs of the Greater Washington community. And it was on that fateful day, when the story of CCACC began!
CCACC has since grown from an organization made up of just a handful of volunteers to one with over 170 employees and hundreds of volunteers. It has grown from holding meetings in a basement, to renting public school grounds for various activities, until today, now expanded to three sizable venues to serve the community. CCACC has kept true to its mission, adhering to the core values of "Love, Integrity, and Harmony" and the spirit of volunteering. It serves more than 100,000 person-time a year, helping people of all ages and backgrounds, from 2 to 103 years old.
Today, CCACC has 7 departments: Adult Day Health Care Center (ADHC), CCACC Health Center (PAVHC), Home Care, Community Services, CCACC Academy, Art Gallery, and Quince Orchard Swim and Tennis Club (QOSTC). Among those, ADHC was established in 2008, while Home Care and Art Gallery were established within the past 10 years. CCACC Academy and QOSTC were merged in 2021.
To celebrate CCACC’s 40th anniversary, we would like to invite all of the Chinese friends who have worked together, and have both contributed and benefited from the services of the center, to share the stories and memories that they have created at CCACC with an essay competition. The Chinese prompt of the essay is “美京華人活動中心與我” and the English prompt is “CCACC and Me.” The essay can be written in either Chinese or English. A committee of judges will select a few representative works from the submissions, which will then be published in CCACC’s commemorative publication (including electronic and audio versions), on the center’s website, and on the local news and social media.
Submissions will be by email. Please indicate the name of the author (in Chinese and English), email address, contact number, age and events participated in CCACC. Please make the subject of your email “Essay Competition for CCACC’s 40th anniversary Celebration.” Any fraudulent practices will result in disqualification.
