Gaithersburg, MD (January 6, 2022) Gaithersburg's Arts on the Green presents Abstract Explosion, an exhibit highlighting shape, color and texture - the essence of abstract art. The exhibit is on display through February 27, 2022, at the Arts Barn Gallery, 311 Kent Square Road. Viewing hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. or by appointment.
A joint artist reception for both the Abstract Explosion exhibit at the Arts Barn and the Art League of Germantown's 9th Annual Juried Exhibition at Kentlands Mansion will be held on Thursday, February 17 from 7 to 8:30 p.m., subject to the City's pandemic restrictions at that time. Attendees are invited to visit both galleries.
Face masks are required inside all City facilities, and social distancing and limited capacity protocols are in place. Gallery access is subject to change based on the current health situation. Please check the City's website for updates.
Abstract art does not attempt to represent an external reality, but instead emphasizes the use of non-representational forms to create meaning and reality.
Mixed media artist Linda Slattery Sherman juried this exhibit. Featured artists include Noelie Angevine (watercolor), Donna Baron (mixed media), Katherine Becker (mixed media), Marylou Bono (acrylic), Anne Cherubim (acrylic), Stephen Dell’Aria (acrylic), Maryann DellaRocco (colored pencil), Sheryl Massaro (Oil), Margaret Polcawich (mixed media), Elizabeth Steel (watercolor), Sunil Sukla (acrylic), Jeanne Sullivan (collage), Alexandra Treadaway-Hoare (watercolor) and Brian Truesdale (acrylic).
"Abstract art is part of my spiritual journey, my form of meditation," says Sherman. "My best paintings come when I lose myself in the process. The journey is equally as important as the finished product, sometimes more so. Sometimes making the painting is about making marks that result from large gestures. Other times it's about the surface of the canvas. I scrape, squirt and rub until I get what I want. Although I generally have something in mind when I start a canvas, oftentimes in reacting to each mark made, I wind up in a very different place from where I started. I let the painting tell me the next move to make."
Sherman earned a Bachelor's of Fine Arts in Graphic Design from Carnegie Mellon University where she studied fine art and design. She has exhibited nationally and is an award-winning signature member of the Baltimore Watercolor Society and the Potomac Valley Watercolorists, and a member of the Gaithersburg Fine Arts Association, the Rockville Art League, the International Society of Experimental Artists, and more.
