Gaithersburg, MD (January 4, 2022)  The City of Gaithersburg celebrates and honors the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by encouraging residents to give back to their community during a Week of Service, January 15 – 22. An official proclamation recognizing Dr. King and encouraging participation in service projects was made by Mayor Jud Ashman at the Gaithersburg Mayor and City Council meeting on January 3. View the presentation here.

Residents are invited to explore the myriad of service activities that are being coordinated by the Montgomery County Volunteer Council. Due to continuing safety precautions during the pandemic, many service activities are virtual and can be done from the comfort and safety of your own home. Examples include making fleece blankets for foster children, sending notes of encouragement to veterans, and making magazine coasters for seniors. The City of Gaithersburg Sports and Youth Services Division is collecting gently used, clean coats and winter apparel for Gaithersburg High School students. Donations can be dropped off at the Activity Center at Bohrer Park through January 18. The Activity Center is located at 506 S. Frederick Avenue, next to Gaithersburg High School. For information, call 301-258-6350.

For those who would like to get outside to help the community, there will be opportunities to assist with the "Explore Gaithersburg" trail mapping project and park clean ups. The Gaithersburg Parks, Arts & Recreation Corporation (G-PARC) invites residents to assist with a GIS coordinate mapping project and park clean up at local parks on Sunday and Monday, January 16 and 17. Advance registration is required. Participants will need a mask, sturdy shoes, and appropriate outdoor apparel. Cellphones are helpful but not required. To register, send your name and the number of people in your volunteer party to GPARC@gaithersburgmd.gov. The assembly time and location will be provided to those who register. SSL hours are available.
