Gaithersburg, Md. (August 17, 2020) Starting in September, 2020, the City of Gaithersburg is changing its bulk refuse collection program to make it more convenient for residents, more efficient for staff, and more thoughtful of the environment.
"Not only are we continuing to provide this great service, but we're improving it in that our residents can now better schedule it according to their needs," said Gaithersburg Mayor Jud Ashman.
Single family homes and townhouse communities have traditionally received bulk pick up collection on the first regularly scheduled recycling day of the month. Residents may now schedule a bulk pick up on any of their regular recycling days, with a limit of one per month.
“Right now our bulk pick up crews visit all neighborhoods the first week of each month looking for items that might not even be there,” said Tony Berger, Acting Director of the Department of Public Works. “This new process will allow us to make better use of staff time, cut down on fuel consumption in our trucks, and even reduce greenhouse gas emission by traveling fewer road miles.”
Appointments are being accepted now for pick ups starting in September. They can be requested via an online form, by emailing BulkPickUp@gaithersburgmd.gov, or by calling 301-258-6370. Items should not be put out until the appointment is confirmed by City staff and instructions have been provided about where to leave the items.
The City’s bulk pick up program collects large households items such as furniture, mattresses, computers, scrap metal, including appliances, lawnmowers, iron furniture, and more. No contractor debris is allowed. For a complete list of what is and is not accepted, visit the Bulk Pick Up webpage on the City’s website. Download the Recycle Coach app for additional recycling tips, notifications, and a look up tool for what can and cannot be recycled under the City’s program.
