Several Recreation Facilities Reopen and Programs Resume
Gaithersburg, MD (June 22, 2020) Following guidance from the Montgomery County Health Department, the City of Gaithersburg will open several more facilities and resume some programming as part of its Phase 2 reopening the week of July 6.
“We were encouraged by how smoothly our Phase 1 reopening went, and we appreciate our residents and guests adhering to safety protocols to protect both themselves and our staff,” said Acting City Manager Dennis Enslinger. “We are currently bringing on additional personnel, conducting training, and adapting our operations, and we will be prepared to offer even more services and programs starting in early July.”
The City’s Phased Service Restoration Plan, which is updated regularly, can be found on the City’s website here. The Plan outlines what to expect in each phase. Specific details about how various facilities and programs will operate can be found on individual webpages.
With the coming of Phase 2, walk-in services will be allowed at City Hall, the Activity Center and the Police Station. Safety protocols will remain in place. Hours and staffing may be limited as many employees continue to telework.
Recreation facilities opening during Phase 2 include:
Farmers Markets at Casey Community Center and Main Street in the Kentlands resume operations the week of July 6. The Casey Market, which relocated from Fulks Corner in Olde Towne, is open on Thursdays, while the Main Street Market is open on Saturdays. Both will operate with reduced hours.
Registration for FunZones, our modified summer camp program, opens for City residents on June 24. Open registration, space permitting, begins July 1. The camps will operate at four sites, 8:30 am. to 4 p.m. from July 20 to August 14.
Gaithersburg’s athletic fields will open for permitted use starting June 27. Permit applications are being accepted now. Use is limited based on gathering number restrictions and other health and safety conditions.
A number of virtual recreation classes are already underway, and several virtual events are being planned, including a 4th of July weekend celebration, a Be Your BEST Fest, and a weeklong SportsFest with daily challenges. Visit the City’s website at gaithersburgmd.gov for details.
