Does the COVID-19 cause discrimination against Chinese Americans?

University of Maryland questionnaire soliciting participants

The following is the press release of the University of Maryland soliciting participation in the questionnaire survey-

Hello! We are Chinese American professors of psychology and education at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and University of Maryland, College Park, Dr. Charissa Cheah and Dr. Cixin Wang.

Since the coronavirus COVID-19 outbreak, we have heard increasing fear, anxiety, and discrimination against Chinese Americans. Some Chinese adults and children in the United States are stressed and worried about these situations.

We want to learn about the experiences of Chinese families in the United States and study how parents and society can help children cope with these experiences and what protective factors you have in your life. Both parents have to be ethnically Chinese to participate in this study

We invite parents to take an online survey, about 30-45 minutes.  After 6 months, we will ask you to fill out a short survey again.

If the child is 4-9 years old, only the parent needs to complete the survey and will receive $10. In 6 months, the parent will receive $15 for completing another short survey.

If the child is 10-18 years old and both child and parent participate, the family will receive $20. In 6 months, parents and children who complete the survey again will receive $30.

All parents will also be entered into the lucky draw win cash prizes of $20 or $50 after completing the survey.

To thank you for your participation, we will provide you with a summary of what we have discovered from this research and some resources at the end of the study, as well as resources for you and your family to help your child during this difficult time.

These data can also help us develop new prevention and intervention plans to help children and families during this and other similar challenges.
