CCACC - CLAPS (Cultural Language Arts Programs and Services) Program

About
CLAPS has been offering lessons in culture and language to children adopted from China and their parents since 2003. CLAPS celebrates the diversity of the families and honors children's heritage. CLAPS has ever since evolved into a major program to providing Chinese language and culture classes to non-Chinese speaking families in the Metropolitan Washington DC area.

Mission
To foster the understanding of the Chinese language and culture for non-Chinese speaking families

  • Learn words/phrases by repetition in class
  • Speak Mandarin in cultural arts & crafts activities
  • Able to speak and answer simple questions
  • Able to carry on simple conversations
  • Understand the basic concept of Chinese language and cultue
Description 

Children language classes are set according to the student's age/grade and language proficiency, classes are: Pre-K, K - G 1, G 2 - 3, G 4 - 5, IC (Integrated Chinese) for older students, and Chinese Conversation for Adults.

Each class size is from 5 to 15 students. There are two semesters each year, 15 weeks in fall and Spring semesters. Classes meet for one and half hours each week on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Children Folk Dance: Introductory Class meets from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Intermediate Class meets from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.
 
Chinese Festival Activities

Celebrating Chinese heritage and Lunar New Year Festival events
Culture Series for Adults 

A topic-oriented lecture is presented in English by invited speakers, to giving a glimpse of Chinese perspectives on life, philosophy and the cultural differences between China and West.
