MeiJing Chinese Opera Society
Introduction to MJCOS
The Jing Chinese Opera society (MJCOS) is part of the CCACC. (Chinese Culture and Community Service Center)
The goal of our society is to promote the art of Beijing Opera. The Society is a non-profit organization and it does not involve in any religion or political activities.
Members of our society are mostly Washington DC area residents who are interested in the art. Mr. Frank Wang is our Master Hu-Chinist (Hu Chin is a two string Chinese violin, an important instrument of Beijing Opera). And Mr. Edward Chen is the president of our society, who also serves as the percussionist (equivalent to the conductor). Most of our society members are retired; some are long-time Beijing Opera enthusiasts dating back from their early childhood in China, while others are first-timer novices. Regardless of the ranking or seniority in the art, everyone is always fully immersed and immensely enjoying the intoxicating music as well as the beautiful lyrics, which are usually drawn from part of the Chinese literature.
Members of our society not only enjoy the music and camaraderie, many also became fast friends for good. We meet twice a week, on Tuesday and Saturdays, to make music and to entertain ourselves. Occasionally, we also participate in celebratory activities of local community. For instance, we put up several skits of Beijing opera at the Lake Forest mall in Gaithersburg, Maryland in February as a part of the festival to celebrate the coming of Chinese Lunar New Year of Dragon.
